Miss Vera Bush Services Sunday
Funeral services for Miss Vera Bush, who died at her home in Dallas
Friday night, were held from the McCammon Chapel Sunday at 3 p.m.
The rites were conducted by Rev. John Wesley Ford, pastor of the
First Methodist church. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.
Miss Bush operated a millinery business in Corsicana for a number of
years before moving to Dallas.
Surviving are two sisters, Misses Willie and Mable Bush, both of
Dallas; two nephews, Raymond and Tyson McIver, both of Dallas; three
nieces, Mrs. A. D. Belt, Corsicana; Mrs. Palmer Chrisman, Austin,
and Mrs. Charlie Walker, San Francisco, Calif., and other relatives.

civic, social and religious leader, died in a local hospital Saturday

Mrs. J. Elmer Butler, long-time Corsicana civic, social and religious
leader, died in Memorial Hospital early Saturday following an extended
illness.
Funeral services were to be held from the McCammon Chapel Saturday at 4
p.m. Burial was to be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The rites were to be conducted by Rev. James Joseph, rector of St.
John’s Episcopal Church, of which she was long an active member.
A native of Cleburne, Mrs. Butler had resided in Corsicana since her
marriage to the late J. Elmer Butler, prominent business and bank
executive. For the past several years she had resided at the Navarro
Hotel.
Surviving are a son, Elmer Butler, Corsicana, and a grandson, Jay
Butler, student in Sewanne University.
Pallbearers were to be W. A. Lang, Ed Polk, Luther Johnson, Jr., Homer
Jester, Robert Cason, Douglas Almond, Clark E. Butler, James Ruth and
E. Y. Cunningham.

- Corsicana, Texas, Jan. 29. - Mrs. Sam H. Butler, died at the family
residence and funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church,
with interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
The services were conducted by the Rev. J. Howard Williams, pastor of
the First Baptist Church, Corsicana and the Rev. Mr. Corkern, pastor of
the Kerens Baptist Church. Mrs. Butler was a native of Navarro County.
Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Herman Roberts,
Corsicana; three sons, Clark, Curry and Burleigh Butler, all of
Corsicana; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jennings, Roane; two
brothers, John Bragg, Roane, and Earl Bragg, Corsicana.

first husband, Captain John F. Stevens, another veteran of the Civil
War.

John Washington Deel Military Record
Enlisted in the Confederate Army on July 11, 1861 at Camp Clark,
Guadalupe County, Texas (There was a Peter J. Deel that enlisted the
same day, same place, same regiment) [He supposedly followed four
elder brothers into the military.]
He was a Private in Company A, 4th Regiment, Texas Infantry
He was wounded in the foot in August 1861
He received a slight wound in the side at Coal Harbor, Va. on June
27, 1862. He was at General Hospital in Richmond, Va.
He was on furlough the month of February, 1863. On March 3, 1863 at
Richmond, Va. he received his January and February pay of $11.00 a
month - total $22.00.
He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863.
(A Union defeat in the campaign for Chattanooga) He was declared
permanently disabled since 9-19-1863. Wound to the knee and leg.
He was in the hospital at Lynchburg, Va.
He was captured at Suffolk, Va.
He was in the hospital at Petersburg, Va. on March 31, 1864
He was again in the Richmond Hospital June 2, 1864 and June 19th,
1864 with the wounded leg. He "deserted" to the convalescent tents
on July 20th.
Totally disqualified on August 13, 1864.
Retired him out on September 28, 1864.
Jeff Stevens told J.B.Rogers (stepson and step grandson) that John
W. had 5 bullets still in him. Whenever he was wounded they poured
whiskey into the wounds to sterilize them, then bound them with silk
strips.
He was granted a Veterans Donation Land Certificate for 1280 acres.
At the time of his pension application he only had 40 acres, valued
at $285; two mules, $70; one wagon and one buggy $30; and one cow
$20.
John W. made application for a CSA pension on August 14, 1899 while
living at Holiday, Texas, at age 60. Approved 9-21-1899. A Dr. L. P.
Tenney made affidavit that he "has been suffering from a gunshot
wound to the right leg at knee joint, received 36 years ago, and
that it renders him unable to earn living by manual labor."

March 13, 1930 Negro Is Shot to Death CORSICANA,
Texas, March 13. - Clarence Carter, negro, 26, is dead as a result of
being struck by a rifle bullet late Wednesday night on the Edgar Eliot
farm south of Angus. A tenant on the farm told officers he heard some
one at his chicken house and fired at a negro who attempted to flee

- Corsicana, Texas. Sept. 23. - Funeral services for Rufus J. Carswell,
24, Fort Worth bank clerk, who was killed in an auto accident Saturday
near Fort Worth, were held at Malakoff Sunday afternoon. He was a
graduate of Corsicana High School. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. M. C. Miles, Kerens; a sister, Mrs. Maurine Young, Dallas, and a brother, John Swanson Carswell, Fort Worth. Notes:

RITES HELD SUNDAY FOR RUFUS CARSWELL, FORMER CORSICANAN
Funeral services for Rufus J. Carswell, aged 24 years, Fort Worth bank
clerk, former Corsicanan, who was instantly killed early Saturday
morning when his car turned over near Fort Worth,
were held Sunda. Rites were held at Fort Worth Sunday morning and
another service was held at the Malakoff cemetery where interment, was
made.
Carswell was a graduate of Corsicana high school and had been connected
with the First National Bank in Fort Worth for about five years.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. M. C. Miles, Kerens: a sister, Mrs.
Maurine Young, Dallas; brother, John Swanson Carswell, Fort Worth; an
aunt, Mrs: Johnny Noble, Corsicana, and a number of other relatives.
The services at Malakoff were conducted by Rev. J. L. Brantley.

- Corsicana, Texas. March 23. - Eddie Brooks Carson, 53, resident of
Corsicana for the last thirty-five years, died Monday at a local
hospital following a short illness and funeral services are pending the
arrival of his son from Toledo, Ohio. Surviving are one son, Earl B.
Carson of Toledo, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Dora Campbell and Mrs.

FUNERAL SERVICES THURSDAY MORNING FOR E. B. CARSON
Funeral services for Eddie Brooks Carson, aged 53 years, who
died Tuesday, were held Thursday morning at 11 o’clock from the
Corley Funeral Home chapel with burial in
Oakwood cemetery. The
rites were conducted by Rev. M. B. Howell, pastor of the
Methodist Protestant church.
Mr. Carson died in the P. and S. Hospital following a short
illness. He was a native of Limestone county but had resided
here for the past 35 years.
Surviving are a son, Earl B. Carson, Toledo, Ohio; two sisters,
Mrs. Dora Campbell and Mrs. Hattie Bauldauf, both of Corsicana,
and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were E. E. Howard, Willie McBroom, Jack Russell,

February 23, 1951, Dallas, Texas Mrs. Carruthers, Resident of Dallas Thirty Years, Dies Mrs. Viola Carruthers, 76, of 4826 Gaston, a resident of Dallas for thirty
years, died Thursday in a Dallas hospital after a brief illness. Mrs.
Carruthers had lived here since the death of her husband, F. W.
Carruthers in Blooming Grove, Navarro County. She was a native of
Blooming Grove. Her husband was in the hardware business there. In
Dallas, Mrs. Carruthers was a member of the Golden Age Hobby Club, an
organization of persons sixty years old or older. Her hobby was
crocheting. She was a member of the Methodist Church and attended Grace
Methodist Church here. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mildred
Yost of Dallas; a son, Dr. Walter Carruthers of Little Rock, Ark.; two
grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be at Corsicana. Notes:

Baylor Hospital, Dallas, Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Carruthers was the widow of the late Walter Carruthers of

years.

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Lee Carson, 23, who died in Houston

daughters, Mrs. Eugenia Story and Miss Alice Carruthers, Corsicana; a

PIONEER CORSICANA WOMAN WAS BURIED MONDAY AFTERNOON
Mrs. Mary E. Carruthers, aged 85 years, pioneer Corsicana
resident, died at the family home about midnight Saturday night.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from
the Sutherland-McCammon Funeral Home. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. The rites were conducted by Dr. P. E. Riley, pastor of
the First Methodist Church.
Mrs. Carruthers came to Corsicana in the early 1870s, and was
the widow of the late Francis Carruthers, pioneer lumberman.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eugenia Story and Miss Alice
Carruthers, Corsicana; a son Victor Carruthers, Panama; three
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Relatives Attend Last Rites Here For Mrs. M. E. Carruthers
Miss Frances Carruthers of Little Rock, Ark., who is a student
at SMU, Dallas and her grandmother, Mrs. Viola Carruthers, of
Dallas, came down Sunday to be with Miss Alice Carruthers and
her sister, Mrs. Eugenia Story upon learning of the death of
Miss Carruthers and Mrs. Story’s mother, Mrs. Mary E. Carruthers,
Saturday night, and to attend the funeral Monday morning.
The large number of sorrowing friends attending the services and
the wealth of beautiful floral offerings attested the love and
exteem in which this good woman and her beloved daughter were
held.
All join in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereft at this
time of great sorrow.

fifty-nine years. Cox was a fireman and engineer on the old Houston
& Texas Central Railroad for many years. He served as Justice of
the Peace several terms. Surviving are his wife; eight children,

The Rev. A. E. Carraway, 65, well-known Methodist minister and pastor
of the North Corsicana Methodist Church, died at his home Monday
morning of paralysis and the funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon. The
Rev. Mr. Carraway was born in Georgia, but had resided in Texas for
many years. He had made his home in Corsicana for a number of years. Surviving
are his wife, two sons, the Rev. A. C. Carraway, Chatfield, and L. K.
Carraway, Corsicana; one daughter, Miss Alleen Carraway, Corsicana; two
sisters, Mrs. W. F. Lloyd, Stephenville, and Mrs. J. A. Heath, Howard Ga.

METHODIST PASTOR OF NORTH CORSICANA CHURCH PASSED AWAY
REV. A. E. CARRAWAY, METHODIST MINISTER DIED SUDDENLY MONDAY
Rev. A. E. Carraway, well-known minister and pastor of the North
Corsicana Methodist church, aged 65 years, nine months and 20 days,
died at his home Monday morning at 8:30 o’clock, following an hour
and one-half illness with paralysis, and the funeral will be held
Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the First Methodist church
with interment in Oakwood cemetery. The funeral service will be
conducted by Rev. A. W. Hall, presiding elder of the Corsicana
Methodist district, assisted by Dr. F. P. Culver, pastor of the
First Methodist church, and Rev. D. A. McGuire, Methodist minister
of Fort Worth.
Rev. Mr. Carraway was born in Georgia but had resided in Texas for
many years. He had made his home in Corsicana for a number of years
and was well-known in Methodist circles in Central Texas. He arose
about 7 o’clock Monday morning and dressed. He complained of being
ill and was helped back into bed, but died a short time afterward.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, Rev. A. C. Carraway, Chatfield;
and L. K. Carraway, Corsicana; one daughter, Miss Alleen Carraway,
Corsicana; two sisters, Mrs. W. F. Floyd, Stephenville; and Mrs. J.
A. Heath, Howard, Ga.
The funeral will be under the direction of the Sutherland Funeral
Home.

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR LOCAL MINISTER
REV. A. E. CARRAWAY DIED SUDDENLY AT HIS HOME HERE MONDAY MORNING
Funeral services for Rev. A. E. Carraway, 65, well known Methodist
minister, who died Monday morning at 8:30 o’clock following a stroke
of paralysis an hour and one-half before, were held Tuesday
afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the First Methodist church, with
burial in Oakwood cemetery. He was born in Georgia, but had been a
resident of this section for many years and had held pastorates of
Methodist churches in Navarro county. At the time of his death, he
was pastor of the North Corsicana Methodist church.
Rev. Mr. Carraway arose about 7 o’clock Monday morning and dressed,
later complaining of being ill. he was aided into his bed and a
physician summonded.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, Rev. A. C. Carraway, Methodist
minister of Chatfield; L. K. Carraway, Corsicana; one daughter, Miss
Alleen Carraway, Corsicana; two sisters, Mrs. W. F. Lloyd,
Stephenville, and Mrs. J. A. Heath, Howard, Ga.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. W. Hall, presiding

May 13, 1933, Vernon, Texas Vernon Truck Victim To Be Buried Sunday Funeral
services will be held at Corsicana Sunday for J. Gordon Carr, 23, of
Corsicana, killed in an accident at an underpass nine miles east of
Vernon Friday night. The body was started for that city after the
arrival of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Carr. Carr was killed
when the truck on which he was hitchhiking to Yellowstone Park with a
friend, went through an underpass and he was thrown against a beam. He
was riding on the highest crate of eggs in a truck en route from Fort
Worth to Paducah. The boys had been picked up at Rhome. Notes:

13.—(AP)—Funeral services for J. Gordon Carr, 23, of
Corsicana, killed yesterday near Vernon when his head struck
an underpass beam as the truck he was riding passed under
it, were held in abevance pending arrival of Corsicana
relatives.
Carr was
hitch-hiking to Yellowstone National Park with Lee Hanks,
20, also of Corsicana. They were given a lift at Rhome by O.
A. Presley of Paducah, who was returning from Fort Worth
with a load of eggs. Carr rode on the highest stack of egg
crates facing to the rear. When the truck reached the
underpass, his head was knocked against the beam with
terrific force. His skull was crushed.
Pressley
said he thought the boys were riding on a lower stack of
crates. Hanks said Carr had climbed to the higher part only
a few minutes before the accident.
The youths
planned to visit relatives in Clarendon and Amarillo en
route West.
Carr
graduated last June from Trinity .University at Waxahachie
and had attended school at Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Gordon
Carr, 23, graduate of Trinity University with the class of
1932, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Carr of Corsicana, was
instantly killed Friday night about 7 o'clock near Vernon,
Texas, according to information received here at an early
hour Saturday morning by relatives.
It was
reported Carr was riding on a high truck, hitch-hiking his
way to the Yellowstone National Park to go to work, when the
truck passed through a low underpass, the youth being struck
by the low ceiling of the underpass.
Prior to
graduating from Trinity University, the young man had

Mrs. S. D. Carr, Corsicana, and Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Ellett,
Powell; and a number of uncles, aunts and other relatives
here.
Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist
church here Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock with burial in
Blooming Grove.
The services will be conducted by Rev. J. W. Bergin, pastor
of the First Methodist church, assisted by Rev. J. F. Adams,
pastor of the Eleventh Avenue Methodist church.

AFTERNOON FOR GORDON CARR
Funeral
services for J. Gordon Carr, 23, who was instantly killed
early Friday night while riding a truck near Vernon, Texas,
were held from the First Methodist church here Sunday
afternoon at 4 o'clock with burial in the Blooming Grove
cemetery.
The funeral
services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Bergin, pastor of the
church, assisted by Rev. J. F. Adams, pastor of the Eleventh
Avenue Methodist church. A. Hastings Harrison, secretary of
the Tulsa, Okla., Y. M. C. A., and formerly secretary of the
local Y. M. C. A., spoke.
Carr and
Lee Hanks, also of
Corsicana, were hitch-hiking to Yellowstone National Park,
where they had jobs. Carr was riding on top of
the truck and his skull was crushed when the truck went
through an underpass, the beam striking Carr and killing him
instantly.
The young
man was a graduate of Corsicana High school, attended Tulsa
University, and graduated from Trinity University,
Waxahachie, with the class of 1932.
Surviving
are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Carr; a brother, Claud
Carr, all of Corsicana.; grandparents, Mrs. S. D. Carr,
Corsicana, and Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Ellett, Powell; and a
number of other relatives.
The funeral
was directed by the Corley Funeral Home.

TULSA YMCA CAMP CABIN
DEDICATED TO GORDON1 CARR
TULSA,
Okla., July 23.—Cabin seven at the Camp E. Rogers Kemp, the
Tulsa Y. M. C. A. camp near Grove, Okla, today was dedicated
to the memory of Gordon Carr, Corsicana youth killed while
hitch-hiking to Yellowstone park two months ago, who last
year was cabin leader of that cabin.
More than
80 boys, parents, and Y. M. C. A. officials joined in the
memorial service to Carr preceding the unveiling of a wooden
arrowhead-shaped plaque bearing his name.
"I regarded
Gordon as my very own," said Hastings Harrison, general
secretary of the Tulsa Y.M.C.A. in relating the moving story
of how he had met 10-year-old "Paper King" Carr in a
Corsicana alley 13 years ago. "I looked on his life as an
answer to the question 'How far can a boy from humble
surroundings who is possessed of an honest heart and a
wholesome ambition go in this world?'
"I do not
see yet why his death had to be, but I do know that he had
achieved character. He could not have had a better character
if he had lived to be 100. The objective of life is achieve
a noble direction. Gordon Carr had achieved this direction.
He was a success."
John
McKibbcn and Robert Schwabe, cabin mates of Carr last year
added their brief tributes, and Jim Bob Mallory, another
cabin-mate unveiled the plaque.

Mrs. Carroll Dies Of Heart Attack
Mrs. Sally Carroll, 71, was found dead in her apartment, 798 West
Thirteenth avenue, about 4 p.m. Thursday when neighbors became uneasy
and investigated after not seen her for some time.
J. W. Sheppard, justice of the peace, Precinct 1, Place 2, conducted an
inquest and returned a coroner’s verdict of “death from natural
causes—heart trouble.”
The coroner said Mrs. Carroll’s body was found slumped in a corner of
her kitchen and he voiced the opinion she died with a heart attack soon
after breakfast, Wednesday, and had been dead from 24 to 30 hours when
her body was discovered Thursday afternoon.
Funeral services will be held from the Corley Chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday
with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
The rites will be conducted by Rev. Peyton Goodman, pastor of the North
Corsicana Methodist church.
Rev. Henry Malone of Fairfield will assist in conducting the service.
Pallbearers are Dick Dickson, Bill Shaw, E. C. Raby, Buster Smith, L. I.
Warren, Grady Murrell, James King and Edward Hardin.

T. Carpenter, Dallas attorney and former legislator who wrote the bill
which founded Texas Technological College at Lubbock, died Saturday at
his home, 4809 Drexel Drive. He had practiced law in Dallas since
1906, except six years as assistant attorney general of Arizona and as
collector of internal revenue for Arizona and New Mexico. Carpenter
was vice-president and general counsel of Southland Life Insurance
Company and a director of Lone Star Steel Company at the time of his
death. Came to Texas at 5. Born at Savannah, Tenn., he came to
Texas at the age of 5, attended public schools in Navarro County and
was graduated from Trinity University in 1894. He entered law practice
at Corsicana and in 1896 was elected county attorney there. Carpenter
was a charter member and an elder in Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
A few years ago, he taught a men's Bible class there. He established
his law office in Dallas in 1906 and remained until 1912, when he moved
to Phoenix. Four years after his return to Dallas in 1918, he was
elected a member of the 38th Texas Legislature. Organized Insurance Firm. Carpenter
was one of the organizers of the Texas Security Life Insurance Company
in 1929 which later merged, through his assistance, with Gulf State
Life Insurance Company. About nine years ago, he helped combine Gulf
States with Southland Life. He was a member of the American, Texas and Dallas Bar Associations. Surviving
are his wife; a son, Thomas A. Carpenter, New York; two daughters, Mrs.
Ted B. Ferguson, Dallas, and Mrs. Robert W. Austin, New York; a
brother, John W. Carpenter, Dallas; three sisters, Mrs. W. A. Wofford,
Dallas; Mrs. W. R. Bishop, Athens; Mrs. J. F. Neff, Corsicana; six
grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be at
11 a.m. Monday in Highland Park Presbyterian Church with Dr. William M.

Funeral Rites For Judge Carpenter In
Dallas, Here
Funeral services for Lewis T. Carpenter, aged 76 years, attorney,
formerly of Corsicana, who died early Saturday morning at his home in
Dallas, were held Monday at 11 o’clock at the Highland Park Presbyterian
church.
A short service was held at Oakwood Cemetery
here Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock and interment was made. The rites
were conducted by Dr. William M. Elliott, Jr., and Dr. J. K. Thompson.
Carpenter was vice president and general counsel of the Southland Life
Insurance Co., and director of the Lone Star Steel Co.
Judge Carpenter, while serving in the Texas legislature as a
representative from Dallas, having been elected in 1922, wrote and
fought through the bill which founded Texas Technological College in
Lubbock.
The attorney from 1912 to 1918 was assistant attorney general of
Arizona, and collector of internal revenue for Arizona and New Mexico,
having received this appointment from William Gibbs McAdoo.
Native of Tennessee
Judge Carpenter was born in Savannah, Tenn., Oct.15, 1871, the son of
Thomas Wirt and Ellen Isaphene Dickson Carpenter. When five years old he
moved to Texas and received his early education in Navarro County public
schools. He attended Trinity University from which he received the
bachelor of arts degree in 1894.
He entered the practice of law in Corsicana in 1895, and the following
year was elected county attorney. After serving two years he became a
partner in the law firm of Frost and Neblett of Corsicana.
Judge Carpenter was married in 1898 to Miss Caroline Johnson, daughter
of a pioneer Navarro County family, who died two and a half years later.
Mrs. Ferguson was a surviving daughter.
In 1906 he was married to Miss Mary Templeton of Corsicana, daughter of
a Presbyterian minister, and moderator of the general assembly of his
church.
Living in Dallas
The attorney moved to Dallas in 1906, establishing his own law practice.
Later he moved to Phoenix, returning to Dallas in 1918.
He was a member of the American Bar Assn., the Texas Bar Assn., and the
Dallas Bar Assn. He was a charter member and an elder in the Highland
Park Presbyterian church, and teacher of the men’s Bible class in that
church for many years.
One of the organizers of the Texas Security Life Insurance Co., in 1929,
he served as vice president and general counsel through a service of
mergers.
Survivors
Survivors include his wife, a son, Thomas A. Carpenter, New York City,
and two daughters, Mrs. Ted. B. Ferguson of Dallas and Mrs. Robert W.
Austin of New York City; a brother, John W. Carpenter, Dallas, and three
sisters, Mrs. W. A. Wofford, Dallas, Mrs. W. R. Bishop, Athens, and Mrs.
J. F. Neff, Corsicana. Six grandchildren and one great grandchild also
survive.
Pallbearers were Curtis White, W. Ray Montgomery, County Judge Al
Templeton, Dan C. Williams, W. C. McCord, R. L. Dillard, Boud Storey and
J. Sid Pulliam.

Park Presbyterian Church and Phi Delta Theta fraternity at SMU. He
is survived by a daughter, Shirley Carpenter; by his mother, and two
sisters, Mrs. Robert W. Austin of Bronxville, N.Y. and Mrs. Ted B.

J. D. Carroll Dies Sunday Morning After Long Illness
J. D. Carroll, 70, retired merchant, 312 West Fifth avenue died Sunday
morning following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Griffin
Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The rites will be conducted by Dr. W. M. Shamburger, pastor of First
Baptist Church, of which he had been an active member. A military
service will be conducted at the grave.
A native Texan, Carroll was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and
was active in the veterans organization.

AGED CORSICANA RESIDENT BURIED HAMILTON CEMETERY
J. G. Caskey, aged 81 years and one month died at 1403 West Fifth avenue
Saturday night at 9:40 o’clock with paralysis, and the funeral services
were conducted from the residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock with
interment in the Hamilton cemetery. Sutherland Undertaking Company had
charge of the services.
Mr. Caskey was a native Texan and had resided in the Navarro county for
more than 61 years.
The services were conducted by Rev. Lawrence Shivers, Methodist
Protestant minister of Mexia.

- Corsicana, Texas, Feb. 21. - Funeral services were held for Mrs.
Lucinda Catherine Cates, 93, resident of the Bazette community for
sixty-six years, who died at her home. Burial was in Prairie Point Cemetery.
Mrs. Cates was born at Columbia, Murry, sic Maury, County Tennessee.
She married Robert Cates in 1898 and they came to Texas in 1872,
settling in the Bazette community. Surviving are seven children. Mrs.
Sarah Faughn of Bentonville, Ark.; Mrs. Ida Philly of Waco, Mrs. Lila
Young of San Antonio, J. M. Cates of Montfort, Lee Cates of Bazette,
Mrs. Minnie Gordon of Corsicana, and Mrs. Ellen Tramel of Bazette;
twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren and a
great-great-grandchild.

Ark.; Mrs. Ida Philly, Waco; Mrs. Lila Young, San Antonio; J. M.
Cates, Montfort; Leo Cates, Bazette; Mrs. Minnie Gordon,
Corsicana, and Mrs. Ellen Tramel, Bazette; 25 grandchildren, 36
great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Vernon Trammell, Jessie Gordon, D. Curtis, and
W. C. Smith, Hugh Gordon and B. F Jones.

Texas. - Funeral services for Mrs. Eugenie Cerf, 78, who died Monday
night in a local hospital following a short illness, were held from the
McCammon Chapel Tuesday. Burial was in the Hebrew Cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rabbi Gerald Klein of Dallas. A
native of Jefferson, Texas, Mrs. Cerf had resided in Corsicana since
childhood. She was the wife of the late I. N. Cerf, former president of
the State National Bank. Surviving are a son, James H. Cerf, and a
daughter, Miss Idalia Cerf of Corsicana; three brothers, W. B. Levy of
Corsicana, Lexie Levy of Waco and M. C. Levy of Waxahachie; a sister,

June 21, 1935 I. N. Cerf Victim of Fatal Attack on Golf Course I.
N. Cerf, 62, president of the State National Bank here for ten years,
died shortly after 5 p.m. Friday at a local hospital suffering a heart
attack on a golf course a few minutes before. Mr. Cerf was a native of
Corsicana. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Rachel Cerf; his wife;
three sons, James Cerf, vice-president of the bank; Robert Cerf, all of
Corsicana, and Uriah Cerf of Dallas, and one daughter, Miss Idalia
Cerf, also of Corsicana. Mr. Cerf was reported to have complained
earlier in the afternoon of something he had eaten at lunch, and said
it gave him pains near the heart. He was taken ill on the golf course,
and a doctor was summoned. Mr. Cerf was brought here and died a few
minutes after arriving. The attending physician said death resulted
from acute coronary occlusion, of a clot in the blood vessels of the
heart, caused by something he had eaten. Mr. Cerf at one time worked
in a grocery store owned by his father, the late Louis Cerf, and E.
Rafield, and later in a dry goods store owned by A. Fox. While
connected with his father in business, he looked after the interests of
numerous farms. Later he was connected with the First National Bank,
and became vice-president, and was a director and large stockholder of
the State National Bank, when it was organized in 1917. On Jan. 1, 1925, he was elected president of the bank, to succeed B. B. Munsey, organizer, and held that position until his death.
Mr. Cerf was a director of the Dallas Joint Stock Land Bank, with which
he has been connected for a number of years. He also was prominent in
Jewish fraternal and religious circles. He was president of Temple Beth
El for a number of years, and also a member of several Masonic Lodges. Cerf, in 1931, paid $15,000 ransom for the release of his son, Robert, who was kidnapped by gangsters. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Notes:

FUNERAL RITES FOR ISAAC N. CERF HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON
CORSICANA BANKER, BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADER DIED SUDDENLY FRIDAY
The last rites for I. N. Cerf, 61, president of the State National Bank,
were conducted at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the family residence,
418 West Fourth avenue, by Rabbi Harry Merfeld of the Fort Worth Beth-El
congregation, and interment was made in the Jewish cemetery. Mr. Cerf
died Friday afternoon shortly after a heart seizure while playing golf.
Rabbi Merfeld was assisted in the service by Rev. T. Edgar Neal, pastor
of the First Methodist church, and by Rev. W. R. Hall, pastor of the
First Presbyterian church, and neighbor of the deceased. The Corsicana
Masonic lodge had charge of the services at the grave.
A quartet, composed of Mmes. M. S. Dockum and Percy Townsend and Messrs.
Edgar Metcalf and Lloyd G. Kerr, sang at the funeral.
Survivors were his widow; his mother, Mrs. Rachel Cerf, of Corsicana;
three sons, James Cerf, vice president of the bank, and Robert Cerf,
both of Corsicana and Uriah Cerf, of Dallas; a daughter, Miss Idalia
Cerf, of Corsicana, and numerous other relatives of Corsicana and other
cities.
Pallbearers were A. L. Levy, M. C. Levy, W. D. Levy, Mox Scheider,
Colman Roddy, B. R. Goldberg, Aaron Levine and Louis Shwarts. Honorary
pallbearers were the directors and personnel of the State National Bank,
and friends.
Banks Closed.
The bank of which Mr. Cerf was president remained closed all day
Saturday and the First National Bank closed at noon Saturday.
Sutherland-McCammon, funeral directors had charge of the funeral
arrangements.
Hundreds upon hundreds of friends from the humblest walks of life to the
highest, and members of the family from all parts of the state, paid
their last tribute of love and respect to Mr. Cerf. The funeral was one
of the most largely attended held in Corsicana in recent years.

and Mrs. Colman Roddy, Temple; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cohen and Mr. and Mrs.

Jeff Alexander, Mrs. Sam Epstein and Miss Corinne Cerf of Dallas.

funeral and Mrs. Merfeld, of Fort Worth.
Friday afternoon, Mr. Cerf was playing golf with friends on the Country
club course, and was stricken with a heart attack. A doctor was
summoned, and Mr. Cerf was brought to the Corsicana Hospital and Clinic,
where he died a few minutes after arrival. Earlier in the afternoon, Mr.
Cerf had complained to friends that something he had eaten had disagreed
with him, and he felt pains in the region of the heart. The attending
physician said Mr. Cerf died of acute coronary occlusion, or a clot in
the blood vessels of the heart.
News of Mr. Cerf’s untimely death spread over the city rapidly, and
hundreds of friends and relatives called at the hospital Friday evening
to extend their sympathies to the bereaved family.
His Business Career.
Mr. Cerf’s first business contacts were made when he, as a youth, worked
in a grocery store owned by his father, the late Louis Cerf, and E.
Raphael. It was here that he looked after the interest of several farms
in Navarro county. Afterwards he worked in a dry goods store owned by A.
Fox.
Later he was connected with the First National Bank here, and became
vice president. When the State National Bank was organized by B. B.
Munsey in 1917, Mr. Cerf became a director and large stockholder. He was
elected to the presidency of the bank on Jan. 1, 1925, to succeed Mr.
Munsey, and held that position until his death.
Mr. Cerf was a director of the Dallas Joint Stock Land Bank, and had
been connected with this organization for a number of years.
He was an outstanding leader in Jewish fraternal and religious circles,
and was president of the Temple Beth-El congregation here for a number
of years. He was also a member of several Masonic circles. He was a
valued director of the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, and a vice
president, serving as chairman of the organization’s public welfare
committee. He was a contributing member of the Y.M.C.A.

At a meeting Thursday of
the Corsicana Hebrew Cemetery Association, the following resolutions
upon the untimely death une 21, of I. N. Cerf, were adopted:
Whereas, On June 21st,
1935, there passed to his reward, I N. Cerf, whom our Heavenly Father,
in his infinite wisdom took unto himself, and
Whereas, In his earthly life I. N. Cerf was a citizen who was useful to and held in high esteem in his community, and
Whereas, He was president
of the Corsicana Hebrew Cemetery Association almost continually since
1910, and during this time served the association faithfully giving of
his time, and money and in general looked after the condition of this
association.
Therefore, Be it resolved
by the Corsicana Hebrew Cemetery Association, that we deeply mourn the
loss of I. N. Cerf our beloved president, and we extend our sympathy to
his beloved family in their great loss.
Be it further resolved
that a copy of this resolution be sent to his family, that a copy be
sent to the local press, and a third copy be kept in the records of
this association.

October 9, 1923, Ennis, Texas ISADORE CERF, VETERAN ENNIS MERCHANT, DIES Isadore
Cerf, 72 years old, for forty-six years a prominent merchant of Ennis,
died at his home here at 2:30 o'clock Thursday morning, following an
illness of four days with influenza and pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at the home here at 9 o'clock Thursday morning, with burial in the Hebrew Cemetery at Corsicana. Dr. David Lefkowitz of Dallas will officiate, assisted by Dr. H. S. Springail of Ennis. Mr.
Cerf is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mamie Cerf; a son, Louis Cerf of
Ennis; a brother, Leon Cerf of Ennis, and a sister, Mrs. Rosalie Wahl
of Luxeville, France. Mr. Cerf was born in Mittelbronn, Loraine,
France, April 11, 1851. He came to the United States in 1869, landing
at New Orleans. He was first engaged in the general merchandise
business at Calvert, later at Corsicana, and opened his present
business with his brother here in 1877. He accumulated substantial
interests and had long been prominent in local business circles.

Remains Interred at Noon.
Funeral services for the late Isadore Cerf of Ennis, who died at his
home there Tuesday night, took place in the Hebrew Cemetery
here at noon today. The body was brought to the cemetery by auto
ambulance, and an immense throng of Ennis citizens followed the remains
to the grave here, all coming in automobiles, and many Corsicana friends
here joined the procession here, Rev. Dr. Barnstdin of Houston
officiated, and there was a great profusion of beautiful floral
offerings.

Rachel Cerf, 86, wife of the late Louis Cerf, died at a local hospital

Dallas, and Rabbi Harry Shapiro, Aguda Achim, Corsicana. A native of
New Orleans, Mrs. Cerf came to Corsicana as a bride seventy years ago

MRS. RACHEL CERF DIED LAST NIGHT; FUNERAL WEDNESDAY
Mrs. Rachel Cerf, age 86 years, widow of the late Louis Cerf, died

S. Callaway passed away peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2005 at
Methodist Medical Center in Dallas at the age of 73 years, 1 month, and
3 days. Mr. Callaway was born on July 9, 1932 in the Sessions Community
near Chatfield. He was born to Earl Callaway and Ona Puckett Callaway.
He retired as a wholesale route salesman, retiring in 1986. He was an
avid outdoorsman, hunter, and golfer who loved sharing his passions
with his grandchildren. He also loved attending the many activities of
his grandchildren and relished playing with his great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Lynn Callaway in 1974 and his parents and brother.
Survivors
include his loving wife of 54 years Bett Callaway of Corsicana.
Daughters: Gail Grimes and husband Gary of Corsicana, and Debbie Bourn
and husband Kevin of Georgetown. Grandchildren: Eric Talley and wife
Elizabeth of Corsicana, Michael Grimes and wife Carroll of Barry,

Howard S. Callaway, 73, of Corsicana passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center in Dallas.
Services will be 4 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with Dr. David Hale officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Allan Reese, Ron Lynch, Bill Gillespie, Bryce Terry, Frank Dunn and Andy Bonner.
Mr.
Callaway was born July 9, 1932, in the Sessions community near
Chatfield, to Earl Callaway and Ona Puckett Callaway. He retired as a
wholesale route salesman in 1986. He was avid outdoorsman, hunter and
golfer who loved sharing his passions with his grandchildren. He also
loved attending the many activities of his grandchildren and relished
playing with his great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Lynn Callaway in 1974; parents and brother. Survivors
include his loving wife of 54 years, Betty Callaway of Corsicana; two
daughters, Gail Grimes and husband Gary of Corsicana and Debbie Bourn
and husband Kevin of Georgetown; four grandchildren, Eric Talley and
wife Elizabeth of Corsicana, Michael Grimes and wife Carroll of Barry,
Melissa Grimes of Corsicana and Kristen Bourn of Austin; four
great-grandchildren, Caroline and Sydney Talley of Corsicana and Daniel
and Mackenzie Grimes of Barry; two sisters, Earline Reese and Linda
Gillespie, both of Ennis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Notes:

IRIS M. PRATER, age 68, of Corsicana, Texas, died Sunday, August 14,
2005, at her residence in Corsicana, Texas. She was the daughter of the
late Roy and Lillie Ivie. She is survived by One Daughter, Diane
Ferguson of Corsicana, Texas & One Son, Hal & Leslie Prater of
Corsicana, Texas. Two Brothers, Joe Ivie of Corsicana, Texas &
George Ivie of Tennessee and one sister Betty Sue McClellan of Tyler,
TX. Arrangements are being handled by Corley Funeral Home, Corsicana,
Texas, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Monday, August 15, 2005. Funeral service will be at Corley Funeral Home

Iris M. Prater, 68, of Corsicana passed away Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005 in Corsicana.
Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gary W. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

will be Joey Ivie, Tommy Phillips, Steve Phillips, Randy Weaver, Brent
Weaver and Andrew McClellan. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond

Shae Seale. Mrs. Prater was born May 11, 1937 in Purdon. She was
a member of Calvary Worship Center of Corsicana and the Ladies
Auxiliary of the VFW. She was a devoted mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, sister and friend to all. Her family will greatly
miss her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Ivie; and sister, Royce Phillips.

Prater is survived by her mother, Lillie Pearl Ivie of Corsicana; son
and daughter-in-law, Hal and Leslie Prater of Corsicana; daughter,
Diane Ferguson of Corsicana; grandsons, Wil Prater of Corsicana and
Brannnon Ferguson of Corsicana; granddaughter and husband, Brooke and
Todd Dalston of Sachse; great-grandson, Hayden Ferguson of Corsicana;
brothers, Joe Ivie of Corsicana and George Ivie of Tennessee; sister
and brother-in-law, Betty Sue and Larry McClellan of Tyler, nieces,
Lana Andrews and Paula Kloecker, both of Corsicana; nephews, Joey Ivie
and Tommy Phillips, both of Corsicana, Steve Phillips of Barry, Randy
Weaver of Tyler, Brent Weaver of Fort Worth and Andrew McClellan of
Tyler; and special friends, Raymond and Sharon Bland of Corsicana.

Tommye Scruggs Kelley, 93, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2005, [August 13th] at a Comanche hospital. Funeral: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Comanche Funeral Home. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana.
She
was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Eldorado, Ark., to L. J. and Ida Mae Flood
Scruggs. She married Pleasant Kelly on Dec. 25, 1941. She was a member
of Gustine United Methodist Church and Daughters of the American
Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her husband April 18, 2005 and her parents. ---------- Tommye

- Corsicana, Texas, Nov. 18. Dan Castellaw, 50, a former employee
of Marks Brothers here, died of a heart attack in Borwnwood Tuesday
morning and funeral services are planned for 11 o'clock Thursday
morning there. He is survived by his wife, his father, T. J.
Castellaw of Barry, and several brothers and sisters.

Garland Powell of Flower Mound, Texas passed away at Cross Timbers Care
Center in Flower Mound on August 15, 2005. He was born on February 20,
1922 in Beaumont, Texas to Grover Jefferson Powell and Emma Clara
Powell. Mr. Powell served his country during World War II
as a Line Chief in the Army Air Corps servicing B-25 bombers in the
India-Burma Theater of Operations. He was recalled to active duty
during the Korean War serving as a Master Sgt. In the United States Air Force servicing the B-29 bombers at Randolph Air Force Base.
He was employed by as a Wax Blender working in the Mobile Oil Refinery for 36 years.
He
is survived by his Cousins, Harvey and Merle Steely , Charles and
Marlene Steely of Lumberton, Texas. James C. (Don) Steely of Woodville,
Texas. His Adopted Son G. David Steely and his wife Jodi of Flower
Mound, Texas. His Adopted Grandchildren Tyler and Madison Steely of
Flower Mound, Texas

Nettie
Ion Bryant, 91, a resident of Haltom City and former long time resident
of Waxahachie went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday,
Aug. 6, 2005.
Nettie was born on Aug. 30, 1913 in Blooming Grove
to Marshall and Armanda (Gill) Bryant. She was a member of the Ferris
Heights United Methodist Church.
Nettie is survived by her
children, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lewis Bryant of Midlothian, Mary Elizabeth
Norman and husband Hugh of Waxahachie and Glenda Smith and Barbara Sims
Gore of Haltom City; twelve grandchildren; 1 adopted grandchild; 23
great grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; 1 brother; Doyle
Bryant of Fort Worth and her extended family, LaDene Cooke of Fort
Worth, Eddie Kelliher of Haltom City, Holly Green of Deland, Fla., Lois
Griffin of Rio Vista, 2 nephews, 1 niece and numerous great nephews and
great nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Lee Bryant,
infant son Jackie Charles Bryant and her sister Nellie Katherine
Crutcher.
The family would like to give a special thank you to
the American Hospice, especially Chaplain Stan Short, Brenda and Bill,
her caregivers, and the staff of North Point Health and Rehab in
Watauga.
Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9,
2005 in the Chapel of the Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home in
Waxahachie with Chaplain Stan Short officiating. Interment was at Cryer
Creek Cemetery in Navarro County with Jimmy Crutcher, Michael Crutcher,
Roger D. Crutcher, Roger Crutcher, Brad Farley and Rod Sutherland
serving as pall bearers.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8.

Well and Prospecting Company, died at his home here Saturday afternoon
