CORSICANA, Texas, April 20 (Special) - Funeral services for Roderick G. Daniel, 61, World War I
veteran, who died here Saturday night, were held in Ennis Monday
afternoon, with interment in the Myrtle cemetery. Native of
Mississippi, Daniel resided in Ennis for forty years prior to moving to
Corsicana last November. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Daniel,
Corsicana; and four brothers, Will and Charlie Daniel, both of
Corsicana; Roy and Jodie Daniel, both of Austin. Notes:

Resident of Kerens Since Town's Beginning Is Dead at 79

Texas, Jan. 17 - R. H. Daniel, 79, a native of this community and a
resident of Kerens since the town was named, died at his home Monday.
His parents came here in 1853 from Alabama and of the family two
sisters remain. Daniel engaged in the mercantile business at the town's
beginning and was in business here more than fifty years. He was active
in church and Masonic circles. He is survived by one son, R. S. Daniel
of Corsicana, and three daughters, Misses Carrie and Erin Daniel of
Kerens and Miss Mary Elizabeth Daniel of Wharton. Funeral services will
be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.

PROMINENT KERENS RESIDENT BURIED THERE ON TUESDAY
KERENS, Jan. 19.—(Spl.)—Funeral services were held at the
Presbyterian church in Kerens Tuesday, January 18, at 2 p.m., for R.
H. Daniel, pioneer resident of this community, who died at the
family home at an early hour Monday morning.
“Uncle Bob,” as he was familiarly known to all, lived to be 78 years
old, spending his entire life within a radius of four miles of
Kerens. Born on May 17, 1860, at Old Wadeville, he moved to Kerens
when the town was founded, a young man of some 20 years, and opened
with W. S. Price, the firm known for 50 years, as Daniel, Price &
Co., dry goods, hats and shoes. He operated this business until his
retirement about six years ago.
He was married to Miss Jennie Stokes, who preceded him in death
several years ago. To this union were born five children, Robert S.
Daniel of Corsicana, Carrie, Erin and Mary Elizabeth Daniel of
Kerens survive. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ola Kimes,
Kerens, and Mrs. Bob Melear of Trinidad, and six grandchildren, Mrs.
A. J. Gibson, Itasca; Mrs. E. C. Newsome, Kerens; Robert Daniel
Gladewater; Martha, Ralph and Billy Daniel of Denton, and a number
of nieces and nephews.
He was a charter member of the Presbyterian church when it was
organized in 1869, and remained active in its various organizations
until ill health prevented his attendance a year or two ago. At the
time of his death he was senior elder.
Services were conducted by Rev. Joe N. Everheart, present pastor,
assisted by Rev. C. E. Wilkins of the Methodist church, and Rev. M.
O. Cheek of the Baptist church. Interment was in the Kerens Cemetery,
under the direction of the P. N> Stockton Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were A. J. Gibson, Eck Newsome, John D. Weedin, John
Joplin, Ralph and Robert Daniel, Jr.

Corsicanian Found Dead in His Bed

CORSICANA,
Texas, Sept. 27. - R. H. Daniels, 50, well-known business man of
Corsicana, was found dead in bed Sunday morning. He was alone in his
room. Mr. Daniels evidently had been dead several hours when friends
discovered him lying on the bed with clothes on. Physicians said he
probably had died soon after retiring Saturday night.
Mr. Daniels is
survived by his wife of Corsicana, a Daughter, Mrs. Lake Littlejohn,
Marshall; two brothers, Charles Daniels, Newcastle, and John Daniels,
New Orleans, and a sister, Mrs. Callie Reddell of Houston. Notes:

Newcastle, Texas; John Daniels, New Orleans, and one sister, Mrs. Callie
Reddell, Houston. All the relatives, except John Daniels were in attendance
at the funeral, and efforts to locate him by telegraph were unavailing.

Death of Judge Davis
Corsicana,
Tex., Sept. 28. - Judge G. W. Davis of Oak Cliff, who was one of the
victims in the Central wreck in Chambers creek bottom, died about
midnight last night and his remains were shipped to Dallas by his wife
and daughters, who have been attending him. The judge while he rallied
at one time and gave evidences of improvement never recovered
consciousness, and he died without recognizing any of those who were at
his bedside.
Mr. A. B. Yantis of Robey, another of the seriously
injured, is not so well this afternoon and there is some alarm on
account of his condition.
Dr. Jester was seen by The News
correspondent this afternoon and stated that while they had hopes that
he would recover, Mr. Yantis was a very sick man and still in great
danger.

of County Superintendent Davis, who died at Kerens, this county, Sunday
night, was buried in the Long Prairie Cemetery

he being her only child, and was in Kerens on a visit when she was
taken sick. She had been a resident of Navarro County for many years
and her funeral was largely attended.

Mrs. Julia Davis, aged 75 years, mother of County Superintendent Davis,
who died at Kerens Sunday night was buried in the Long Prairie
cemetery yesterday afternoon. The deceased made her home with her
son here, he being her only child, and was at Kerens on a visit when
taken sick. She had been a resident of this county for many years, and
her funeral yesterday was largely attended.

A native
of Emhouse, Navarro County, Davis lived in Dallas for several years
before moving to Cleburne over a year ago. He died here Friday.
He
was a member of the Methodist Church, Scottish Rite, the Dallas
Consistory, and the Cook Peavy Masonic Lodge AF & AM and Moslah
Temple Shrine both in Fort Worth.

Funeral services for Mrs. H. B. Daviss, 78, long-time Corsicana
resident, who died late Saturday, were held Monday morning at 10:30
o’clock from the First Methodist church of which she was a member.
Burial was in Oakwood
cemetery. The rites were conducted by Dr. Erwin F. Bohmfalk,
pastor of the church.
Mrs. Daviss, the widow of the late Judge H. B. Daviss, former county
attorney and district judge here, had been ill for some time.
Surviving are three sons, H. B. Daviss, Lubbock; D. Burle Daviss,
Meadville, Pa., and Phil Daviss, Corsicana; three daughters, Mrs. W.

JOE NAGY IS DEAD RESULT OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN FALL
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD IN CORSICANA ON THURSDAY MORNING
Joe Nagy, aged about 55 years, is dead as the result of injuries
received when he fell from a windmill near Dilly, Texas, seventy five
miles south of San Antonio, according to information received Tuesday
afternoon by P. D. Williams in telephone conversation with C. L.
Witherspoon.
The body is scheduled to arrive in Corsicana early Thursday and the
funeral will be held the same morning with burial in the Catholic
cemetery. The Rev. V. Graffeo
will conduct the services.
The accident which caused Mr. Nagy’s death occurred on a ranch jointly
owned by him and Mr. Witherspoon. He is survived by his wife and several
children. A brother, Steve Nagy, also lives near Corsicana.
Mr. Nagy was well known in Corsicana and Navarro county where he had
resided many years prior to his removal to South Texas.
He was a member of the local K. of P. lodge.

Corsicana Rites Set for W. H. Bird, Victim of Attack
Funeral
services for W. H. (Harry) Bird, 67, brother of Mrs. James D. Gee, 5206
Miller, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Corsicana. He lived in
Fort Stockton, Pecos County.
Bird died Monday of his [sic] injuries received when he was attacked and robbed several months ago in Galveston.
He
was born in Commerce, Hunt County, and moved to Corsicana as a young
man. He later worked as an undertaker in Fort Stockton. He was a clerk
in a Galveston tourist court at the time of the robbery. He was sent to
a Fort Stockton hospital after the attack.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Gee; a brother, Mark E. Bird, Los Angeles, Calif., and two nieces and a nephew. Notes:

Rites Wednesday
Harry Bird, former Corsicana resident, died at Fort Stockton Monday.
Funeral services are planned from the McCammon Funeral Chapel Wednesday
at 10 a.m. with burial in Oakwood
cemetery. The rites will be
conducted by Dr. Matthew H. Arnold, pastor of the Westminister
Presbyterian church.
Bird is a nephew of the late Mrs. Bank Sutherland of Corsicana and made
his home here for many years.

Rites Wednesday For Harry Bird
Funeral services for W. H. (Harry) Bird, 67, who died Monday in Fort
Stockton, were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the McCammon Funeral
Chapel. Burial was in Oakwood
cemetery. The rites were
conducted by Dr. Matthew H. Arnold, pastor of Westminister Presbyterian
church.
Bird, a nephew of the late Mrs. C. B. Sutherland of Corsicana, died of
injuries received several months ago in Galveston when he was attacked
and robbed. He was employed as a clerk in a Galveston tourist camp at
the time of the robbery and later was sent to a Fort Stockton hospital.

Texas May 11. - W. T. Bingham, 73 years old, was found dead in bed
Sunday morning at the home of his son-in-law, C. R. Steeley (sic).
Death was from natural causes.
Mr. Bingham had been a resident of
Corsicana for thirty years and is survived by the following children;

Texas, Nov. 15. - Funeral services for James Obe Davis, Route 1,
Malakoff, who died in a local hospital after a short illness, were held
at the Cross Roads Methodist Church. Burial was in the

Texas, Feb. 8 - Funeral services for Mrs. Lona Davis, 46, wife of J. O.
Davis of Corbet, Navarro County, who died Wednesday night at 7:15
o'clock, were held from the family residence Friday afternoon with
burial in the Hamilton Cemetery. Surviving are her husband and four children.

Mrs. Lona Davis, aged 46 years, wife of J. O. Davis, Corbet died at the
family residence Wednesday night at 7:15 o’clock following a long
illness, and the funeral will be held from the family residence Friday
afternoon at 2 o’clock with burial in the Hamilton
cemetery.
Rev. J. Howard Williams, pastor of the First Baptist church of Corsicana
will conduct the funeral services. Sutherland Undertaking company will
have charge of the funeral.

Texas, Dec. 9. - Charles Biddy, 5 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George
H. Biddy, died at the family residence on the Corsicana-Corbet road

Andrew
Jackson “Jack” Green, 89, of Salem. NM went to be with the Lord
Thursday, June 23, 2005. Jack was born Aug. 22, 1915 in Corsicana, TX
to James Henry and Amanda Eola Cornett Green both of whom preceded him
in death.
Jack was a veteran of the US Army and he served his country proudly and honorably for the duration of world war two
as a non commissioned officer. Jack was awarded the Good Conduct Medal
and American Defense Medal. Jack was a member of the Hatch Church of
Christ. Jack had a love for the outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish,
and to work in his garden. He also loved playing his fiddle, talking to
people but most of all spending time with a1l his family, friends and
neighbors who knew and loved him.
Jack is survived by Opal his
wife of 57 years, their son Ron Green and wife Amie of Roswell, New
Mexico; granddaughter Stacie Boswell and husband Sid of Blacksburg,
Virginia; Grandson Bryce of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by
son Tom Green; grandson Aaron and granddaughter Ruth Ann all of Corpus
Christi, Texas. Jack is survived by one brother Delbert Green of
California. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his daughter Opal Olie Darlene Green.
Jack was also preceded in death by one sister Myrtle Ruff, and four
brothers, George, Jeff, Thirine and Sam Green.
Services will be
held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the Church of Christ in
Hatch, NM with Rev. Jim Wood officiating. Burial with military honors

Exa
Matlock, a retired, longtime business teacher at Conroe High School,
died June 24, 2005, at her residence at Ainsley Courte Assisted Living
Facility located in Cypress. She was born March 21, 1914, in Frost to
pioneer Texas physicians John W. Matlock and Robbie Davis Matlock. Miss
Matlock received her master’s degree at Columbia University, New York.
She did post graduate work at the University of Texas, University of
Washington, University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin. She
loved traveling the world with her friends and sisters. She was
preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and four brothers. She
is survived by her sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
A simple graveside service for family and close friends will be
held at 11 a.m. July 2 at Frost Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at
Frost United Methodist Church.

Betty Lynn Louise (Arnold) Bull

— Betty Lynn Louise (Arnold) Bull, (80 years old) departed this world
June 3, 2005, at Hays Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Betty
Lynn was the youngest child of the late Melvin Luther Arnold,
originally of Dyer, Tennessee; and Vinnie Catherine (Welch) Arnold,
originally of Bell County, Texas.
Born September 6, 1924, at
home in Hewitt, Texas, Betty Lynn and her family soon moved to
homestead farm land in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in the farming
settlement of Rangerville in Cameron County, Texas.
Betty Lynn
pursued her post secondary degree in education and teacher
certification at Southwest Texas State Teachers’ College (now Texas
State University) in San Marcos. Upon graduation, she began teaching in
rural Cameron County.
A renowned elementary school educator,
Mrs. Bull’s teaching career spanned from days of barefoot children in
one-room schoolhouses to modern-day classrooms and learning techniques.
She retired in 1983 from Navarro Independent School District to care for her late husband.
She
will be remembered fondly by her colleagues, and generations of
children who benefited from her love of teaching. Her daughters were
lucky to accompany her in the "home visits" she would make to the
families of her first grade students.
We learned so much about
caring and giving above and beyond from our mother. During her
retirement, Mrs. Bull became a self-published author.
Her
collection of short stories and poems, "Depression’s Daughter" recalled
her girlhood on her family’s Cameron County farm during the Great
Depression. Mrs.
Bull was invited to read portions of her book to school children in the Seguin ISD.
She also enjoyed invitations to read during story-times at Marvin & Linda McCall’s childcare facility in Seguin.
We are thankful that our mother put her life and memories down on paper before Parkinson’s disease took effect.
Betty
Lynn Bull was the widow of Richard "Dick" Alonson Bull. Wed June 8,
1951, in Harlingen, Texas, they were married 39 years at the time of
his passing on November 11, 1990. Mr. and Mrs. Bull and their daughters
lived in Seguin, Texas, for more than 30 years.
They were both active in every church to which they belonged.
Church,
teaching and family were her life. In her last years Betty was an
active member and teacher at the Kingsbury Baptist Church.
She
is survived by her daughters Sally Catherine Bull Greear and Jeannette
Lynn Bull Robison and their spouses; her grandsons, Sanford Joseph
Korge and Jordan Bull Korge; her sister, Sallie Edith (Arnold) Smith;
sister in laws Doris Arnold and Edith Arnold; and many nephews, nieces,
and cousins. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Milton Eugene
Arnold, Randell Meredith Arnold and infant grandson Joseph Clay Cowan.
The
family wishes to thank the employees of Hays Nursing Home in San Marcos
for all the care given to our mother these last few years.
Funeral arrangements are through Goetz Funeral Home in Seguin.

Mrs. Wilson was born March 15, 1918 in Bazette, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Kerens.
Mrs.
Wilson is preceded in death by her husband, W. W. Wilson. She is
survived by her cousin, Mrs. Billie Jo Thompson of Corsicana, another
cousin and his wife, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Slate of Corsicana, and

 OGDEN – Our father, our hero, our friend, Louis Aubry Moore, 85, passed away on June 20, 2005 at the Crestwood Care Center.
He was born April 19, 1920 in Kerens, Texas, the second child of Thomas Patrick Moore and Mattie Lena Bruner.
He
married Mildred Clyde Burns on June 5, 1943. She passed away on
December 26, 1946, while he was serving his country in Germany.
He
married our mom, Virginia Patricia Shely on March 25, 1949 in San
Antonio, Texas. From this union two children were born. She passed away
on May 1, 1995.
He was raised and lived his life in Kerens,
Texas until he joined the Army Air Corps/United States Air Force in
1939. He served in the South Pacific and Germany during World War II, and in Japan during the Korean War.
Our father was a true patriot, who loved his country without question.
The family lived in several states until he decided to retire after 23
½ years in the only other state besides Texas that he loved. He and the
family have resided in Utah since that time. After retirement he owned
and operated Moore’s Texaco Service Station in Ogden, where he met many
people he considered friends.
He is survived by his daughter,
Patricia Moore, Willard; his son, David Moore, Ogden; and a stepson he
raised, Warren Unsell, Humble Texas; his family not by birth but by
love, Harold and Jane Hobster, Russ and Myrna Messerly, and Darrell and
Helen Streble.
He is preceded in death by his parents, both wives, his brothers Julius and Roy, and by his sister Julia Slagle.
The
family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and social workers at
McKay-Dee Hospital whose kindness will never be forgotten. To Odyssey
Hospice, how can we ever repay all of you for allowing our father to
die with the dignity he deserved. You’ll always be remembered in our
prayers. To the staff of Crestwood Care Center, thank you for the care
and attention you gave to our father. The generosity of spirit you
showed to my brother and I will remain in our hearts forever. |

William H. Hastings, Jr. of Dallas passed away at Medical City on June
27, 2005. He was born on March 30, 1917 in Corsicana, Texas to William
Henry and Margaret Pannill Hastings.
Bill was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in 1939. He retired after 30 years serving during World War II, the Korean War, and theVietnam War. He received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and Legion of Merit.
He
is survived by his daughters Elizabeth Hastings of New Zealand,

G. Holcomb, 62, died Saturday night in Corsicana. Holcomb, a resident
of Blum for 16 years, was born in Ellis County and was married to Annie
Elizabeth Boone. He moved to Blum from Bosque County 16 years ago. He
was an employee of the G. C. and S. F. railroad, and was a member of
the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were to have been held at 2
o'clock this afternoon at the Blum Baptist Church, with the Reverand J.
G. Miller officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, under the
direction of Dillon Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Ross Walts,
Clay Hyder, Earl Hall, Warner McBee, Frank Martin and Henry
Ripley. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. John G. Holcomb of Blum;

Blum Resident Dies Saturday
John G. Holcomb, aged 62 years, of Blum Hill county, was stricken with a
heart attack here Saturday night and died at the P. and S. Hospital at
9:40 p.m., 10 minutes after being admitted.
The funeral services will be held from the First Baptist church in Blum
Tuesday afternoon with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Cleburne.

Mrs. Parsons was born July 17, 1920 in Purdon,
Texas. She was a graduate of Dawson High School and the University of
North Texas, where she received her teaching certificate. She was a

Economics teacher at Holliday high School, retiring in 1970.

African area May 6 by the War Department.

Vets Hospital Employee Dies Sunday Morning
Willie Hugh Dempsey, 53, formerly of Purdon, died in Waco early Sunday
morning. He suffered a heart attack last week.
Funeral services were held from the Purdon Baptist church Monday
afternoon with burial in the Younger Cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Rev. W. O. Estes, pastor of the Dawson
Baptist church.
Dempsey was an employee at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in
Waco.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Dempsey, Waco; a daughter, Betty
Clyde Dempsey, Waco; two brothers, Ford Dempsey, Waco, and Douglas

died at the Physicians and Surgeons Hospital here Sunday morning. The
funeral took place Sunday afternoon with burial in the Zion Rest Cemetery. Dillard was 35 years old and is survived by his wife and six children.

Eddie Donaho, 51, died Saturday at his home in the Pickett community.
Services were held Monday afternoon from the Corley Funeral Chapel with

Dallas Woman Dies On Corsicana Visit
Mrs.
Lena Murell Dickson of 5701 Victor died Wednesday night while visiting
Mrs. Harry Jungerman of Corsicana, Rawlins M. Colquitt, a nephew, was
informed.
Mrs. Dickson was a sister of Mrs. O. B. Colquitt, wife of
the former Governor. Two other sisters survive her. Mrs. Maggie Murrell
Robison, Tulsa, and Mrs. Eddie Murrell Harper, Shreveport.

Mr. Selby was a custodian for the Corsicana Independent School District for 30 years.

Mrs. Mead was born and raised in
State Center, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Pearl Pfantz. Mrs. Mead
with her husband, Ralph, moved to Texas in 1972. She had been a
resident of Silver City since 1994.
Mrs. Mead was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph I. Mead; and one son, Gregory K. Mead.

Ruth Alyce (Leonard) Irvin, age 96, born in Corsicana May 18, 1909, was taken to her heavenly home on July 4, 2005.
She
was a faithful Christian, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of
52 years, T. E. (Dink) Irvin, her parents George O. Leonard and Emma
Leonard, and brother George O. Leonard Jr. Mrs. Irvin is
survived by her son Mike Irvin and daughter-in-law Sara of Clifton; her
granddaughter Diane Case and her husband Brent and great-grandson
Hunter Michael Case of Flower Mound; step-grandchildren Preston Scott
of Vail, Colo., and Gayle Scott and her daughter Elizabeth Grace Scott
of Clifton.
She is survived by two sisters, Eddie Bess Thompson
and Emma Jean Humphries, both of Corsicana; and many nieces and
nephews, and loving friends. The Leonard side of Mrs.
Irvin’s family settled in Navarro County with known records dating back
to 1866. Mrs. Irvin was a faithful believer in the Lord Jesus Christ,
and a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Corsicana. She was a
volunteer member of the Navarro Regional Hospital Auxiliary, serving
actively from 1984 through 2004, and donating 8,000 hours to this very
meaningful and worthwhile service organization.
In lieu of
flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Navarro
Regional Hospital Auxiliary, 3201 W. Hwy. 22, Corsicana, TX 75110, the

Towns Holsey, Colonel USAF Retired, died April 2, 2005, at the Army
Residence Community, San Antonio. He was born in Austin, Texas, July
10, 1907, but spent his early years in Corsicana, Texas, where he
practiced law until World War II
at which time he volunteered for service in the Army Air Corp. His
people were active in the early history of Texas, three Mitchell
brothers having died at the Alamo and Goliad. The Holseys were active
in Georgia politics and journalism, one great-grandfather have served
in the Congress of the United States, and an uncle having been a
legislator in the Texas Senate. Colonel Holsey's military career
included World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
After his retirement from the United States Air Force, Colonel Holsey
and his wife, Frances Jane Leathers Holsey, made their homes in
Oakwood, Texas, where they had ranching interests, and at the Army
Residence Community in San Antonio. He also headed the
Patterson-Banister Chair at the University of Texas at Austin, this
being an endowment made by his previous law partner, Charles T.
Banister. He is survived by his wife, Frances Jane Leathers Holsey, a
sister, Mary Alice Hughes of Center, Texas, and a nephew, James S.
Young, of Springfield, Missouri. Graveside services will be in Oakwood,
Texas, Wednesday, April 6, at 3:00 P.M. A Memorial Service will follow
later in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the

Monday morning at his home following an illness of about a year, and

Funeral services for John Day, aged 65, who died in the Navarro county
hospital, Tuesday night following a lingering illness was held Thursday
afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Sutherland Undertaking parlors, with

the First Presbyterian church.

here Monday. He had lived here for many years. He was a prominent Mason

HIGHLY ESTEEMED CITIZEN
Passed Away This Morning After Ten Days’ Illness.
W. L. Derden, than whom Corsicana had no more highly esteemed
citizen, passed away at his home on South Fourteenth street at his
home on South Fourteenth street at 7 o’clock this morning after an
illness of ten days. The deceased was 77 years, ten months and 27
days old, and most of his very active life had been spent in Texas.
Deceased was a native of Mississippi, but came to Texas many years
ago, and before coming to Corsicana about twenty years ago, had
lived for many years in the Bethel community in Anderson county,
near Palestine where he still owns large property interests. The
deceased was a quiet and unassuming citizen, but a man of fine sense
and of highest order of integrity and of high ideals. He had been a
Mason and a Methodist for many years, and his life was spent as a
consistent member of both. He was always a good neighbor and his
life was full of good deeds. He loved his friends, and never failed
to demonstrate that love by kindly deeds when occasion came for him
to do so. His home life was ideal. He loved his family, and was ever
anxious for their welfare and right living. The following grown
children survive: Mrs. Ed. Peil, Houston; Mrs. S. O. Wofford, Fort
Worth; W. L. Derden, Jr., Anderson county; Mrs. John R. Mays, Miss
Jennie Derden, Miss Queen Derden and Jot Derden of Corsicana.
Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at
4:30, after which the Masons will take charge and will conduct the
last sad rites at the cemetery.
Rev. J. W. Fort, pastor of the First Methodist church and Rev. C. R.
Wright, now of Fort Worth, but a former pastor of this church will
conduct the services at the home.
Mr. Derden was a gallant Confederate soldier. He was a member of the
4th Texas regiment, Hood’s Texas Brigade, W. H. (Howdy) Martin’s
company. Discussing his death, Mr. John W. Duren said that today
fifty-four years ago Mr. Derden was in the Gaines’ farm fight, one
of the hardest fought battles of the war.
The active pall-bearers are: Jno. A. Thompson, R. S. Neblett,
Charles DeLafosse, Bige Tinkle, Tom Thornell, E. A. Johnson.
Honorary; J. L. Weller, R. K. Blackshear, Dick Jackson, W. L.

Funeral of the Late W. L. Derden Largely Attended.
The remains of the late W. L. Derden were interred in
Oakwood this
afternoon after funeral services at the home, conducted by Rev. J.
W. Fort, pastor of the First Methodist church, of which deceased was
a member. At the grave the services were conducted by the Masons, of
which order the deceased had long been a member. The procession that
followed the remains to their last resting place was an immense one,
and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. A good man,
the influence of whose quiet and pure life will long be an example
for all that is pure and good, has gone to his reward, and those who
knew him in life will never cease to honor his memory.
Out –of-town people who were here to attend the funeral were, H. P.
Barton, Richard Derden, Mrs. Dr. Collins, John Luke Collins and Mrs.
Donald Matthews of Malakoff.

Banker Dies At Emhouse

CORSICANA,
Texas. April 21. - Funeral services for Charles Henry DeLafosse, 70,
native Texan and pioneer resident of Navarro County, whose body was
discovered in a barn near Emhouse late Monday afternoon, will be held
from the First Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with
interment in Oakwood Cemetery. He had apparently been dead for several hours.
Mr.
DeLafosse was born in Polk County, Texas, July 6, 1860 and moved to
Navarro County forty-nine years ago, settling in the Emhouse community,
then known as the Tinkle's Chapel community. He moved to Corsicana
thirty years ago.
He was well known in religious, civic, political,
banking and other circles in this section of Texas, and at the time of
his death was president of the First National Bank at Emhouse, a
stockholder in local banks and a deacon in the Baptist Church. He owned
extensive farm interests in the Emhouse community.
Mr. DeLafosse was
re-elected as Navarro County Democratic chairman at the last election.
He was Navarro County Commissioner during the '90s, and formerly was a
member of the Corsicana School Board and the board of managers for the
P. & S. Hospital.
He had always taken a leading part in all civic and other movements here.
Survivors
are his wife, six sons, Elmer D. DeLafosse, Breckenridge; Charles J.
DeLafosse, Emhouse; George T. DeLafosse, Albany; Felix DeLafosse,
Malakoff; Floyd B. DeLafosse, Shawnee, Ok., and Roy E. DeLafosse,
Corsicana; two daughters, Mrs. John Odell, Shawnee, Ok., and Mrs. J. T.
Elliott, Amarillo; eleven grandchildren; two brothers, Louis DeLafosse,
Groveton, and Peter DeLafosse, Kingsville, and other relatives.
The funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. J. Howard Williams, pastor of the First Baptist Church.
