Karla Ruth Moore 3/18/2003 Police looking into death; Investigation into woman's passing routine procedure
By RAYMOND LINEX II/Daily Sun Staff The death
of a Corsicana woman Saturday is being investigated as if it were a
homicide, but Corsicana Police Chief G.M. Cox said the cause of death
could be natural causes.
Karla Ruth Moore, 41, was pronounced dead early Saturday morning
after her husband, Rudock Moore, 45, called 9-1-1 from the Skinny's
Store on Second Avenue at 4:29 a.m., telling dispatchers his wife was
unresponsive and feared dead, the CPD said in a press release. After Corsicana Fire Rescue exhausted all attempts to resuscitate her at the couple's 20th Street residence, the
CPD was called, standard procedure in deaths unattended by a medical official, Cox said. "We don't know if it was a homicide or not," Cox said Monday. "At this point, it could be anything. ...
"I can tell you there were no visible means of death apparent." Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Bob McQuary
pronounced Moore dead and ordered an autopsy. Cox said Moore's husband was cooperating with police.
"We know she was alive at 11 p.m., and we know she was dead at 4 a.m., according to her husband" Cox said. "What
happened between 11 and 4, we have no clue." Cpl.
Todd Morris was the first officer on the scene and found circumstances
he deemed suspicious, though police cannot elaborate, and contacted his
shift commander Sgt. Jimmie Hensley, the CPD said in the release.
Hensley summoned investigators Detective Cpl. Mark Nanny and Detective
Charles Fincher, who arrived on the scene about 5:30. "There was no indication it was a homicide, but no case for natural causes. If it comes out it's a homicide, you only
have one chance to work the crime scene," Cox said.

Hugh Gerthon Morgan
May 8, 1915 - Mar 20, 2003
Hugh Gerthon Morgan was born on May 8, 1915, in Greenville, South Carolina to Clarence and Mettie Williams Morgan. He
died on March 20, 2003, in Corsicana, Texas. H.
Gerthon "Buck" Morgan attended Poe Mill School and Parker District High
School in Greenville, South Carolina. Buck started working in the mill
while still a child and graduated from Parker High as salutatorian.
There were no college scholarship opportunities extended to students
from his high school seeking to attend Furman University so he worked
full time, first at a textile mill and then a steel mill, to finance
his education. He received his B.A. degree from Furman in four years,
graduating cum laude. He taught for a year in Parker District and then
received a scholarship to the University of Chicago where he earned
M.A. and Ph.D. behavioral science degrees. He was invited to stay at
the University of Chicago as a professor, but opted to follow his
mentor, Dr. Daniel A. Prescott, to the University of Maryland to
establish the Institute for Child Study in 1946. They had express
assurances from the university and the State of Maryland, that the
institute would be racially integrated. Dr. Morgan was made assistant
director of the institute and a full professor. At the time, he was the
youngest full professor at a major university. The institute graduated
the first African American in the history of the university just four
years later with a Ph.D. degree.
Dr. Morgan's additional experiences in higher education included
extensive course work with Dr. Helen Ross of Chicago Institute for
Psychoanalysis; and internships at Michael Reese Hospital with Dr.
Samuel Beck, inventor of the electroencephalogram (EEG); at Orthogenic
School with Dr. Guy Buswell, and with Mandel Sherman who co-founded the
Reese Davis School of Psychiatry in Beverly Hills, California. Dr.
Morgan also studied with Dr. Leo Krammer of Johns Hopkins University
with fully funded grants from the W.T. Grant Foundation. In 1947, Dr. Morgan was sent by the U.S.
State Department to spend nine months in Germany helping to develop
methods for democratizing the schools and public institutions. He also
studied and reported on the learning process in Uruguay for the
National Institutes of Health, and with FBI protection and the escort
of a Catholic priest assisted the United States attorney general with
the integration of James Meredith into the University of Mississippi. Dr.
Morgan was honored by the king of Sweden for his worldwide contribution
to children by being the only American at afternoon tea at the summer
