Obituary Clipping
9/8/2002 Toddler dead, driver rescued after overpass collapse
near Richland (local story developing) By JAMIE STENGLE/Associated Press Writer RICHLAND
-- A truck driver trapped in the rubble of an overpass collapse was
freed Sunday afternoon, almost eight hours after his rig brought the
Interstate 45 overpass down. A 19-month-old boy in the vehicle died in
the accident.
Rescuers cut
away at the cab to get to the driver. Cleaster Broadway, 41, of Moro,
Ark., had been communicating with sheriff's and Department of Public
Safety officials since the collapse, said Lt. Gary Myles. Just before 5 p.m. the man's bare foot could be seen through a small opening and he was soon
covered with a white sheet as workers pulled him to safety. An oxygen mask covered his mouth and nose. As he was placed on a waiting stretcher, the group of rescuers
began to clap. "It feels great to have him out," Corsicana Fire Chief Donald McMullan said. Broadway
was being treated in the emergency room of Hillcrest Baptist Medical
Center in Waco late Sunday afternoon, nursing supervisor Barbara Miller
said. His condition wasn't immediately available.
Cranes
had been brought in to raise the debris from the truck, but they were
not used. Rescuers took advantage of an opening created by a pillar
sticking up through the concrete to rescue the driver, who had been
pinned between a pillar and an I-beam, said Lt. Ron Franks of the
Corsicana Fire Department. "We didn't mess with the
integrity of the concrete," Franks said. The driver was brought out through a natural opening in the debris. Rescuers continued to try to reach the
toddler's body after Broadway was rescued. Myles said no other vehicles were involved in the accident, which occurred about 9 a.m.
DPS spokesman Charlie Morgan said the streets were wet but rain was not falling at the time of the accident. Myles said the truck
was traveling northbound when it lost control. "He
skidded off to the right and overcorrected and came back to the left,"
Myles said. "He went over an embankment and hit a structure that
supports the bridge on the southbound side. The bridge collapsed,
closing the southbound lane to traffic."
The twisted end of the trailer, which was hauling paper, could be seen protruding from under the two-lane bridge. Dr.
Robert Kingman, a surgeon from Corsicana, said Broadway's chest and leg
were pinned down by the roof of the truck, but his injuries did not
appear to be life threatening. "He
was asking about his son," said Scott Huston, a Richland firefighter
who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident happened. Huston said Broadway knew
the boy was dead. As
rain fell intermittently throughout the day, rescuers from several
agencies worked to extract Broadway from the wreckage. Officials said
he remained in good spirits throughout. The Salvation Army and Red Cross worked under a tent nearby distributing food and beverages to the crews clustering
around the opening that led to the wreckage. A steady stream of cars passed by, taking the exit just before the wreck site to detour through Richland.
Myles
said the detour of southbound traffic on Interstate 45, the main artery
between Dallas and Houston, could be in place up to two days while
crews clear debris. Richland is about 60 miles south of Dallas. -------- 9/9/2002 1 DEAD, 1 MIRACLE: Collapse
of bridge near Richland kills toddler; dad survives By RAYMOND LINEX II/Daily Sun Staff RICHLAND
-- Scott Fry couldn't believe his eyes. The blind corner Interstate 45
offers near Richland yielded something he couldn't immediately
comprehend. "It had just
happened. There was still dust settling," the Conroe resident said. "What scared me was the (18 wheeler) behind me." Safely,
the tractor-trailer rig came to a rest behind Fry and wife Brandi, and
that's when Scott noticed the trailer protruding out from under the
State Highway 14 bridge, which had just collapsed and fallen onto the
southbound lane of I-45. Something was under the rubble. "At first I didn't realize what happened. It was a shock -- it's a blind curve -- to see an
overpass on the road," Fry said. Under
that overpass was 41-year-old Cleaster Broadway of Arkansas and
19-month-old son Courtney, both trapped in the cab of the
trademark-orange Schnieder truck Cleaster was driving. Just before 5
p.m., Cleaster was pulled from the rubble alive. His son was killed,
and pulled out more than an hour later.
Department
of Public Safety troopers are not sure what led to the accident, but
it's clear how the bridge collapsed. Broadway was northbound when
something went wrong, as skid marks mere feet before the bridge attest
to. His trailer jackknifed, carrying the rig off the highway and down
an embankment. It hit a pillar supporting the State Highway 14
northbound bridge that crosses the southbound lane of I-45 and the
bridge crumbled around the cab soon after. "The tractor is on its side, wrapped
around that concrete column," Corsicana Fire Chief Donald McMullan said. Somehow,
Broadway survived, and was transported by helicopter to a Waco
hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with no injuries that
were life-threatening, the Associated Press reported. The
accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. Scott and Brandi Fry were returning
home from Fort Worth, where they attended a company banquet for drivers
the night before. Scott is a truck driver for Ben E. Keith, though he
doesn't drive over the road, making local deliveries instead. The
couple had spent the night in Ennis with a relative, giving them a jump
on his peers who were still in Fort Worth. When they initially came
around the curve, it was them, the 18-wheeler behind them and one other
car. While it rained much of Sunday, Fry said the roadway
was dry then. "It was dry enough that the truck behind us locked up his brakes and left tire marks," he said. He
said he went to the other side of the bridge and started yelling with
no response. Then, he got on top of the fallen bridge, not considering
its stability, or lack thereof.
"It didn't really hit me until I got
on top of the bridge and could look in and see it had crushed the truck," he said. No response. Then his wife came back to the side nearest their vehicle.
"She got an answer," Fry said. The column Broadway hit created a hole in the bridge, and created just enough space for
him to survive and a few rescue workers at a time to enter. He talked to Brandi, told her his name and asked for hers. "My wife said he was very surprisingly
alert," Fry said, "(but) he said he couldn't hear or see his son." Fry
said another lady, an off-duty emergency technician, arrived and
thought Broadway may have been in shock and that possibly there was not
a child involved. That notion didn't last long though, and neither did
the thought that Broadway might have to lose his right leg in order to
get out.
Plans
were being discussed to amputate it, but Corsicana surgeon Robert
Kingman, who spent about three or four hours with Broadway, nixed those
ideas quickly.
"Once we got
there, it was clear that was not the next step," he said. "He was
moving his foot and he could feel it, and his vital signs were stable."
Ironically,
Broadway's 10 toes were first out of the rubble, as rescue workers
pulled him out from the side of the rubble and immediately covered him,
placed him on a stretcher, moved him to an ambulance and transferred
him to the helicopter on the other side of the bridge. The flight
rescue team arrived about 10, an the unidentified nurse spent most of
the next seven hours in the tiny confines with Broadway. "We didn't even have access to his face (initially)," Dr. Kingman said.
Firefighters
from Corsicana and the Richland Volunteer unit cut through the wreckage
to free Broadway up more, Kingman said. He had a metal beam over his
chest, but it did not affect his breathing.
CFD Chief Donald McMullan said the rescue was a pain-staking process, as the stability of the bridge was questionable. "(Our
guys) explained to him it would take some time," McMullan said. "We had
to take the seat apart, cut metal and pry things in short spurts until
we could finally free him."
Said Kingman, "You didn't have to do anything heroic, just methodical." McMullan said he was unsure where the child was located
during travel, but he thought the toddler was seated close to his dad. Troopers Pat Brice and Jeff Taylor were the first law enforcement or emergency personnel
on the scene, as they were doing routine patrol around mile marker 217. Richland Curve, as the area in which the bridge once sat is often referred too, is at 219.
"We got here within five minutes," Taylor said, "and the bridge was already collapsed." Said Brice, "When
he (initially) struck it, it didn't come right down. It shifted and then collapsed." Brice,
who led the investigation for DPS, said he began speaking with
Broadway, but did not inquire about the accident, wanting to comfort
Broadway instead. He did find out Broadway was heading for a stop in
Dallas after leaving Houston. The trailer Broadway was hauling was
filled with large rolls of paper, which Kingman said appeared to be
helping support the bridge. Brice said there were no witnesses to the actual accident, which delayed traffic both
north and southbound for hours. At 6 p.m., southbound traffic was snarled five miles behind the scene. CFD firefighter Steve Vandiver was transported to Navarro Regional
Hospital as a precaution because of dehydration, McMullan said. He was treated and released, a CFD official later said. Rescue
workers from the Navarro County Sheriff's Office and the Corsicana
Emergency Corps were also on hand, as were Texas Department of
Transportation officials, DPS License and Weights officials and Navarro
County Emergency Coordinator Eric Meyers. Several local restaurants and
stores aided with refreshments for workers, and DPS set up a command
post with the help of the local national guard. Gary
Sanders with DPS License and Weights out of Palestine said federal law
allows for riders in tractor trailers as long as company officials
supply a letter of approval. It was unclear in Broadway had permission,
because Schnieder officials on the scene would not comment. Scott and Brandi Fry stayed at the scene until 10:30 before returning home.
Their thoughts were still in Corsicana later in the evening, however. "It was a horrible deal," Scott
said. "Somebody was looking out for (Broadway). When we rolled
up on it, I thought 'There's no way anybody makes it.' "I hate it about the child, but I'm glad he's OK." |
