OBITUARY OF HIS WIFE: Elizabeth Aves Long

Letty Erringer
1929 - 2021

Letty Long Erringer August 2, 1929 - October 20, 2021 Letty died peacefully Wednesday morning at age 92. A longtime resident of Mill Valley, she was born August 2nd, in Dallas, Texas to the late Ambrose Long and Edith (James) Long. She grew up in a talented household - her father was an interior designer and her mother a ballet dancer and dance instructor. Her encounters with Alexandra Danilova, Georges Balanchine, and other ballet luminaries in early years at the dance studio inspired stories throughout her life. Life in the Episcopal Church was very important to her, from her family's early close friend, Father B - Reverend Eugene Blankenship, the priest of the Church of the Holy Cross in Dallas, to her ongoing relationship with the Church of Our Savior in Mill Valley. Another thread in Letty's life was her relationship with the Hopi Indian Tribe at Oraibi, Arizona through her friendship with Seba Siwiquaptewa, also known as Seba James. Her family has wonderful memories of their travels in Arizona, to Iron Springs, where her parents had a summer cabin, and to the Hopi village of Oraibi. She attended Hockaday School in Dallas, then Scripps College in San Diego, where she earned a degree in comparative literature. She developed a love of writing which she pursued as an avocation throughout the rest of her life. A chance encounter at the ballet studio led to a lifelong and loving marriage to Orville Erringer Jr. They were married February 3, 1956 in Dallas by Father B. Their first two children were Alan, and Elizabeth, born in Dallas. They made their way, living briefly in Arizona - where their third child Mary was born, to Mill Valley, where they laid down roots to this day. In Mill Valley, in the Homestead Valley neighborhood, Letty threw herself into various volunteer work - the Junior League, lunch distribution at the school in Marin City, an assistant therapist at Napa State Hospital, the Friends of the Library, and the Outdoor Art Club. Later on she worked at Clos Du Bois vineyards and as an administrator at Tamalpais High School. Her gentle and empathetic nature, not to mention her training at the state hospital, came in useful in an event where a frantic young man with a gun burst into their house in Homestead Valley. He held her at gunpoint while Orville was able to escape and notify police. After some alarm and a six hour standoff, she managed to calm the intruder down, and finally to take his gun from him and to hand it over to the sheriff, who received it gingerly. Unbeknownst to Letty, the gun was cocked. In recent times, Letty lived with Orville at The Redwoods in Mill Valley, and more recently at Creekwood in Novato. Despite a stroke and resulting aphasia which made conversation difficult, she was always able to communicate, and she and Orville continued their vibrant life together for many years at Creekwood. Orville recently said of her passing, "She's my love, my light, and my life." Many thanks to the folks at Creekwood who have cared for her and for Orville so graciously over the years. She will be remembered and sorely missed by her husband Orville; their extended family, Russell and his wife Marian and grandchildren Alec and Leif and his son; their great-grandchild Baz Ryker; Alan and his wife Anu and grandchildren Katja and Niko; Elizabeth and her husband Steve and grandchildren Theresa and Lucy; and Mary and her husband August and grandchildren Corey and Colin, and his wife Adri. She made innumerable close and dear friends throughout her life, she had a gift for that. Services and a celebration of Letty's life will be held at a later date.
