OBITUARY

SNYDER - Wiley Bert Dennis was born in Farmers Branch, Texas, on March 19, 1910. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Dennis, members of pioneer families of Dallas County.
Mr. Dennis attended schools in Dallas county and graduated from San Angelo High School. He also attended San Angelo Junior College.
The Dennis family moved to San Angelo in the 1920's when Jack, the oldest son, became enamored with ranching while working on the Bob Mims Ranch. The Mims and Demere families were relatives. With the help of their father, Jack, Bert and John began their ranching careers with Jack Canning.  They first leased the Pecos County ranch of Maud S> Kincaid Saenger, where they ran sheep and cattle.
On Sept 9, 1938, Bert married Dorothy Lee Austin in San Angelo, Texas, and they moved to the ranch in Fort Stockton. In 1942, they sold their lease to Guy Rachal and moved to their present ranch, which was the old Marion Long place in Borden County. The three brothers continued to operate a partnership until 1949 when Jack was killed in a plane crash.
When John returned from the service in the Pacific, they purchased another ranch from Clayton and Johnson. In Borden County and they continued to work together until the 1960's.
Mr. Dennis was the first rancher in Borden County to utilize a piper Cub in his ranch work. (1943) Not only did he use it in rounding up, but it was a must in the constant effort to keep the coyote population under control.
He served as president of the Borden County School Board when it experienced a large expansion program and included all grades from the first through the twelfth. Up until this time, children past the sixth-grade level were sent by bus to Snyder, Lamesa or Big Spring. Mr. Dennis was a constant backer of all sports, not only while his children were involved, but through the present day. He has received many honors andd awards for his help with 4-H and school related programs.
He is an honorary life member of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association. He has served for many years as president of the Animal Control Association with headquarters in San Antonio. He was chairman of the Animal Damage Control Committee of the Texas Goat and Sheep Raisers Association. He was named Rancher of the Year4 in 1985 by the  Colorado River Soil and Water Conservation Service. He also has served on the Ranching Heritage Committee in Lubbock. He was a member of the First Chhristian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the home; two sons, Steve Dennis of Odessa and Joel Dennis of Gail; one daughter, Lisa Dennis Mahler of Edna; and four grand children, Jeffrey Dennis of Gail, Bert Patrick Dennis of Odessa, and Andrew Dennis Mahler and Matthew Lee Mahler, both of Edna.
Service was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4,  at the First Christian Church in Snyder with Dr. Tim Griffin, pastor officiating. He was assisted by Mr. Mickey McMeans.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo with the Rev. David Mendel, pastor of the First Christian Church in Odessa officiating.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity.
